Character profile - charlie
The character’s name:
Charlie is the main character and protagonist, he wrote the book through a series of letters to an unknown friend. Charlie has no friends at the start of the book when he begins high school, since his best friend Michael killed himself a few months earlier.
Physical description:
Charlie is normal height with normal brown hair and eyes and wears normal clothes (except for the suit Patrick bought him for Christmas that he ends up wearing to school a few times).
Relationship to or with other characters in the novel:
Patrick- always looks after Charlie and includes him in everything without being condescending, even though he is older.
Sam- admires Charlie and is extremely surprised and touched when she finds out his best friend killed himself. In the end she does love Charlie the way he always loved her.
Mary-Elizabeth- she dates Charlie for a while but realises the relationship is too "one-sided." She visits Charlie the most when he is in hospital and is a true friend.
Bill- an awesome mentor to Charlie and solves many of his problems. He is the first person at high school to be nice to him.
Aunt Helen- in Charlie's eyes she always was his favourite person, his feeling change for her when he realises what happened many years ago.
What qualities do they possess?
Charlie is a wallflower. He really does live in his own little world sometimes, watching people and analyzing them. Charlie is very honest, thoughtful of everyone else, kind and creative. Charlie is extremely compassionate and selfless. Especially when it comes to looking after people, such as Brad and Sam after their breakups, and his sister during her pregnancy.
Likes:
Charlie loves to write and is always asking Bill, his English teacher, for extra books to read and extra essays to write. He also loves hanging out with Sam and Patrick, watching "The Rocky Horror Show", going to Kings after a football game and seeing his brother, when he comes to visit. Aunt Helen is supposedly Charlie's favourite person in the whole world but after remembering what she did to him as a child he feels differently.
Dislikes:
Charlie hates when the people he loves get treated badly and have no self respect (Sam, Patrick, Candace, Aunt Helen).
Skills and abilities:
Charlie is a very fast reader and amazing writer. He manages to do up to eight extra essays on books Bill recommends throughout the year. He is also very selfless and is always taking care of others and forgetting about himself, which happens to be his greatest flaw.
How do other characters see them?
Everyone sees Charlie as a wallflower. Someone who notices everything happening around themselves, without being apart of it. Sam, Patrick and Mary-Elizabeth see Charlie as a close friend, a freshmen who can keep up with them (seniors). Charlie brother and sister see him as their ignorant younger brother. Bill sees Charlie as someone who doesn't realise how amazing they are, not just at writing, but as a human being in general.
What motivates them?
Every since Bill told Charlie to participate he was determined to make friends. As soon as he met Sam he feel in love with her and was intent on being with her but only if she wanted to.
What are their flaws?
Charlie is extremely emotional and tends to cry a lot. Although his heart is in the right place, that doesn't stop Charlie from loosing control. He does have certain anger management issues, which go a long way back: "I used to play sports when I was little, and I was actually very good, but the problem was that it used to make me too aggressive, so the doctors told my mom I would have to stop." He also seems to suffer from PTSD and social anxiety, he has no friends until he meets Patrick because he isn’t very good at socialising. Bill is the one that encourages Charlie to participate. Charlie also forgets to look after himself the majority of the time because he is too busy worrying about everyone else.
What do you remember most clearly about the character?
I clearly remember how nervous Charlie was to say ‘hi’ to Patrick at the very first football game. He was analyzing the situation for a while ,then made his move. Patrick was so welcoming and friendly, but could never understand how much it really meant to Charlie to have a friend.
